BC Patient Quality Control Board

In 2008 the BC Government put into place Patient Quality Control Boards to address health care treatment that doesn’t live up to the world class health system British Columbians  should expect and are entitled to. To create these boards, the Government legislated Bill 41 – the Patient Care Quality Review Board Act which lays out the expectations and mandate that the Boards operate under.

A Quality Care Review is warranted if:

(i) the delivery of, or the failure to deliver, health care;

(ii) the quality of health care delivered;

(iii) the delivery of, or the failure to deliver, a service relating to health care;

(iv) the quality of any service relating to health care, and

(b) made by or on behalf of the individual to whom the health care or service was delivered or not delivered;

Columbians told us during the Conversation on Health: that a more robust and accessible complaints process would help improve our public health care system.

It is always best to first raise your concern or complaint at the local level. If you have a concern about the quality of care that you or a loved one received, we suggest you first discuss your concerns with the person who provided the service. If that does not address your concern, the next step is to make a formal complaint through the Patient Care Quality Office in your health region.

If you are not satisfied with how your complaint has been resolved by the Patient Care Quality Office, then you are encouraged to request that an independent Patient Care Quality Review Board review the matter.
