British Columbia Association of Bariatric Advocates, a not-for-profit Society, was founded by bariatric surgery patients for the purpose of raising awareness regarding all aspects of weight loss surgery.
According to Statistics Canada, the percentage of Canadians who are overweight or obese has risen dramatically in recent years, mirroring a worldwide phenomenon.
Obesity is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, osteoarthritis, some cancers and gallbladder disease. A study done in 2004 showed that a majority of Canadian’s —almost 60%—were in a weight range that increased their risk of developing health problems.
The statistics relating to obesity in our country are staggering, and we at BCABA have made it our goal to do all we can to change this by advocating our Government for more funding, and by educating all about the issues relating to obesity and the methods required to live a healthy lifestyle.
