We’ve heard this before and the latest study confirms that Weight Loss Surgery patients who undergo gastric bypass surgery have a higher risk of developing kidney stones. The reason is that the bypass surgery results in changes in their urine composition most likely due to the mal-absorption of various minerals via the bypass of the small intestine as part of their RnYGB surgery.
A new study, published in the March 2010 issue of The Journal of Urology, from research carried out by UT Southwestern Medical Centre found that some of these urinary changes place weight-loss surgery patients at higher risk Continue reading 'WLS Bypass Increases Risk for Kidney Stones'»

Often us website writers run into days and even weeks when the words just don’t seem to appear. The last 2 weeks have been like that for me. I’m the kind of guy that asks for help when I run into a road block, so I posted a message here on WL&S Support asking for some ideas. I got two really good ones. Janice suggested writing about “inspiration”. That got the juices flowing! I know about motivation, attitude AND inspiration. As a Life Coach, it’s hard to see the world as anything else than being at least half full. Then right behind Janice’s post was Heather’s post. She suggested the “bitter truth”. All the awful, dirty secrets associated to weight loss and the surgery alternatives for weight loss.
I must say – these two ideas seemed mutually exclusive. In fact for a few days, I’d say I was even more stymied that when I asked for help on the discussion forum. The good thing is that Janice and Heather have caused me to think and think hard! In the end, it all seems so crystal clear, maybe even a revelation! An amazing event is poised to take place March 27-28th in Victoria BC Canada. This 2 day conference has been in the making for more than 3 years. The brain child of the non-profit BCABA (British Columbia Advocacy Bariatric Association) this 1st conference on Weight Loss Surgery is shaping up to be an extraordinary culmination of information on all the aspects of obesity and weight loss surgery alternatives.
Obesity is now the biggest health risk factor for most Canadians. With more than 55% of us classified as over weight and 1 in 5 of us actually obese, no one can ignore this terrible health challenge any longer.
Whether you’re a health professional, politician, suffering with obesity or interested in the future of health for your family and fellow Canadians, you can’t afford to miss this opportunity. In our interview with BCABA President, Kris Greene, WLS Support was astounded to discover the depth, experience and knowledge of the health professionals and Weight Loss Surgery subject matter experts who will be presenting at the conference. If you have young children like I do then Dr. Seuss books are probably well known to you. One of my favourites is “The Sneetches” and while my children like it because of the illustrations of Sylvester McMonkey McBean’s wild machines and the wonderful rhythm, I continue to read it because the lesson is one I hope my children come to deeply understand. It’s the lesson of prejudice and discrimination in subtle and not so subtle forms.
Prejudice is an area of non-tolerance for me but I have to admit I’m not completely free of it myself. It’s a tricky one and over the last few months I have had to re-examine my thinking, specifically when it comes to people that are obese. Continue reading 'Perceptions on Obesity'»

Newswise — Obesity is a condition that often follows family lines, but bariatric surgery offers hope for breaking this generational pattern.
“Bariatric surgery is part of a transformational lifestyle change,” said Christopher Still, D.O., director of the Geisinger Center for Nutrition and Weight Management. “Patients who are most successful after bariatric surgery must adapt to healthy diet and exercise, and many times this new lifestyle will rub off on family members, resulting in a healthier family unit.” Continue reading 'Bariatric Surgery Can Break Obesity Cycle In Families'»
WLS Support is ALL for the latest Facebook craze where women are putting the colour of their bra into their FB status on a daily basis to help raise the awareness of Breast Cancer. After all, 80% of people in the Weight Loss Surgery community are women! Just becasue it doesn’t directly impact their Weight Loss Surgery journey, doesn’t mean it isn’t critical to women’s health – skinny or over weight. Breast Cancer is a terrible disease that needs to be beaten ASAP! As we’ve said before, we’re not just about WLS. If it impacts the care and health of our member’s, then we’re happy to publish it.
Besides, this latest FB phenomenon is fun or it should be. As I was doing a bit of research for this article, I was amazed at the “anti” backlash. People are claiming everything from “it’s not respectful” to “everyone is already aware of Breast Cancer and that writing your bra colour is just another way of flirting at the expense of people suffering a terrible disease”.
So here’s how it all started. Continue reading 'Bra Colour For Breast Cancer Awareness'»
