3 Tips To Be A Valentine To Your Body

Whether or not you celebrate Valentine’s Day with a special someone or with friends and family, we often forget the one who is nearest and dearest to us – our bodies! We expect them to keep going with little or no appreciation, and deny them the good food, rest, sleep and exercise they actually need. It’s not until we get sick or injured that we realize how much we take them for granted. So here are three ways to say “I love you” to your nearest and dearest body!

1. Take big breaths regularly. Marc David author of “The Slow Down Diet” says we are often short of Vitamin O – meaning oxygen which improves energy levels. What’s more, the more you relax the more calories you burn, and breathing is a great way to relax! So try taking regular “breath breaks” at work by taking 10 big breaths.

2. Slow down and tune in. Notice what is going on in your body. Are you tense in your chest, shoulders, gut? Emotional tensions often show up as physical sensations in the body. So instead of bottling up an upset, try telling the story to someone you trust so you can let it go. And remember – talking, laughter and tears are natural forms of emotional release that help you feel better afterwards.

3. Be present each moment. Enjoy yourself. When you sit down to eat, notice your body before you start and its level of hunger, then enjoy the taste and smell of your food. The more you relax before eating, the better your digestion and metabolism will be, and the more you can enjoy the experience.

5 Tips to Make New Year’s Resolutions That Last

It’s January 2012 and time to think about what you want for the year ahead. What resolutions do you want to make? Maybe this year you want to lose weight (a popular one), get fit, spend more time with your family, change jobs, learn a new skill, or tick off the next big challenge on your bucketlist?

So you start off with great enthusiasm. You hit the gym, buy the new diet book, get on the scales or register for the new class, but often by the end of January find you have run out of steam and are back at square one.

So why is this such a common experience? The word ‘resolution’ in the dictionary means to determine, to decide, to resolve, and I believe what we call resolutions are more often like wishes. We want something for sure, but we haven’t made a firm resolve, thought it through, or taken it seriously enough to make a detailed plan. We hope just wanting it will be enough and it usually isn’t!

What we underestimate is that change takes effort. Because our brains view any kind of change as a potential threat, they try to protect us by favouring the familiar. Holding onto old habits and routines also saves you a lot of energy. Remember the last time you started a new job and you went home exhausted at the end of the first day, even though all you did all day was try to learn people’s names?

So making a change means you have to get assertive with your old brain wiring. You need a clear vision to start with and a good plan to guide you. Then you need to take single minded action long enough for the new habits and thoughts to become your new normal. Read the rest of this post

Obesity is one of the most common health problems in the Canada and the USA. The food we eat plays a role in the growing crisis of obesity. We know that diabetes as well as coronary disease could be the result of obesity. To avoid becoming overweight, we have to steer clear of sugary, salty as well as fatty foods.

Below are what are widely known as the worst snack foods. It is advisable that if the snack food has an excessive amount fat that you keep away from it. Pork rinds, French fries and donuts all have a large amount of fat but they do not have beneficial nutrients. Furthermore, trans fat – the worst type of fat – is exactly what these foods contain.
