I'll shortly be receiving my referral for the Self-pay mid-band but I was wondering who I should ask to be referred to. When I called the office the young lady said I would get in quicker with Tang, but I seem to read very little about him and lots about Dr. Amson on here. Your thoughts?
Also, where is the mid-band surgery performed, at their office or at Royal Jubilee?
Thanks for the information.
Susan
By the way, all you wonderful people out there are looking fantastic!

All surgery in Victoria is done in one of the hospitals, usually the Jubilee. No surgeon in Victoria uses a private clinic yet.
Vancouver has at least 1 private clinic for banding.
Kelowna uses the Kelowna Hospital
I suspect the receptionist at the office is right – Dr Tang will be slightly faster, but then as it's Mid-band surgery, we're talking weeks difference – not months or years. Dr Tang is Dr Amson's partner. From a surgery perspective you'll be in very good hands.

Dr. Amson performed my Mid Band surgery on January 20th of this year: the guy is amazing. I had every co-morbidity in the book and he safely dealt with all of them. He came back and saw me at 8:00 pm in the Hospital after he performed my surgery at 2:00 pm that day. He came back to the hospital at 8:00 am the next morning to make sure I was well. He even said I could come to his office that afternoon if I needed too….
Right before my surgery he asked for my husband's cell number so he could call him after I was in Recovery. He responds to e-mails and was nice enough to introduce me to my surgery "twin" after my surgery was over…
So, I would go for Dr. Amson; he really impressed me. I haven't had a fill yet and I have gone from 272 to 242 lbs as of this morning. The band (even unfilled) is making me super-accountable!
Off topic: Read the Jessie Ahroni book about 10x before your surgery and make what she says your mantra!
Good luck and I'll be so excited to hear about your journey! Fiona

There is not enough good things I could say about dr. Amson. I have heard great things about both surgeons but since Dr. Amson is my surgeon he is the most awesome guy ever!!! hehe
I had a question about a month after surgery and emailed him (not thinking I would hear anything..he's a very busy guy) and he emailed me within a half hour to put my concerns to rest!!! I **highly** recommended Dr. Amson!! Not only an awesome surgeon but a totally awesome guy!!! I am sure in great hands with both though!

I had my surgery on February 17/10 with Dr Amson. I am also extremely happy with how I was treated. He never makes you feel like he is in a rush to get to the next patient and he has great bedside manner. I am on Day 11 and I have zero complaints. I have lost 13lbs so far. I am sure Dr Tang is good but I never hear anything about him. I live in Northern B.C. and our Orthopedic surgeon cant say enough good things about Dr Amson. He has seen patients that had there surgery with Dr Amson and he says he is a genius. That made me way less nervous on the day of the surgery. From the day of my first appointment to the day of the surgery was 4 months. If could of been a little faster but they were waiting for some test results that my Doc had not told me I needed. Good luck.

Dr. Tang was my surgeon for my rny and I have no regrets for having him instead of Dr. Amson. I will say that I have never actually met Dr. Amson but have heard enough about him through this website and people in my local support group to get a general idea of what it means to be his patient.
I think as far as Dr. Tang's surgery skills you are in wonderful hands and so I don't think that is a concern when choosing but by all means, keep asking everyone what they think.
I have found in listening and reading that people have different expectations of the surgeon that they choose and I guess I feel that they really don't have time to be our "friends" and hold our hand through it all but that's just my opinion.
Good luck to you whichever you choose!
Cheri
