Does anyone know if this new HST is going to be applied to the cost of banding? if so, will it start this weekend (as I've heard some things will) or will it start at the next deadline (can't remember when that is but I believe it's a month or two away). I'm interested 'cause if I'm understanding this HST correctly it could be another $800 on the surgery if the cost is about $16000.

HST will not be applied to anything that is GST exempt. In other words, everyhting that has GST on it now, will have the 12% HST.

From the Canadain Govt GST site:

Certain specific products and services are exempt from GST. Examples of
these products and services are:

Most health, medical, and dental services performed by
licensed physicians or dentists for medical reasons;
Child-care services;
Long-term residential accommodation;
Most goods and services provided by charities.

What you need to ask of your surgeon or clinic that you're dealing with for your Banding, – "do they currently add GST to their services?" – if they do, then HST will apply when it comes into affect. If not, then no HST

The date for HST is currently July 1st

Thanks for the information, Ron…greatly appreciated. I shouldn't have looked that up on my own but I guess I wasn't thinking. I'm going to ask about the GST on the services by Tang and if it's applicable I'll prepay.
