Hello
I am just wondering how people managed to get even close to 60 gr of protein a day in the first stages of eating? Do i have to resort to protein drinks?? Any suggestions from the pro's :)

Absolutely! You MUST be supplementing protein via a protein powder mixed with water or milk (not more than 1% milk) Not as critical for a Bandster as for RnY , but non the less, I think for the 1st months, You must supplement protein. Remember, as you loss weight, yo want it to be fat, NOT muscle mass.

I second Ron's post.
Protein is vitally important and if your body doesn't get enough it breaks down existing muscle to get it. That muscle is necessary, besides the obvious, to burn calories. Less protein means less muscle which means fewer calories burned and the process only worsens over time. Fuel your muscles with adequate protein and it will make you strong and able to burn more calories even when not exercising.
Don't "resort" to protein drinks… embrace them. Find one or two you like, or can at least tolerate, and make them part of your daily routine, just like your vitamins.

I went to see the dietitian before surgery and she told me they didn't really like protein shakes because of all the sugar. The example menu she gave me have no protein drinks/powder on it…………I guess i was under the impression i wouldn't need to us them…….Can you get a protein powder that you mix with milk to get the protein from both? How many grams of protein are in the average protein powder per serving???

Hi Dre,
I too (although I'm RNY) started to panic about getting in this 60grams of protien in. I can only eat so much and I can only take so much of my shakes cuz i find everything is so sweet since surgery. So I went to GNC today and bought two AMAZING drink mixes to add to my water!! I figure since I'm doing my damndest to get my 64oz of water in a day why not make that count for something. I bought two flavors…ones lemonade and the other is icetea. I was kinda weiry cuz they are kinda expensive but they have a guarantee so i could take them back. No risk!! My ice tea has 0 sugars, 0 carbs, 20g protein and is only 80 calories for 600mls and the lemonaide (this one is an isolate)only has 0.7 sugars, 1.4 carbs, 21g protien and 90 cals. As I scream and rave how I'm loving these I only hope the 'experts' around here (ron & sherri) don't tell me there's something wrong with them!!!
Hope that helps with the protien intake and makes your water all the better!

I think you may be thinking about Ensure, Boost & Glucerna… none of which are protein supplements.
Look for protein powders sweetened with Splenda/sucralose or stevia and it's main ingredient is whey protein isolate. Some popular brands are Syntrax Nectar, 4EverFit Fruit Blast, PVL Iso Gold & BioX Power Whey Isolate. Sports nutrition stores like GNC or Popeye's will have something for you, you can also try health food stores, and many grocery stores carry BioX products.
Read the label to see how much protein is contained in each "scoop" (each brand uses a different size) and estimate how much of that scoop is about 20g of protein… less if you will mix it into milk.

Hey April
I was wondering what the name of your protein is? It would be great to kill two birds with one stone. I sat down last night and made a menu of blender food that add up to 60 gr of protein a day (lots of cottage cheese), eating 1/2 a cup at a time………but the calories only make 560! This is challenging because of having to drink enough during a small window of time between each meal. I would like to have some sort of protein drink to top me up. How are you feeling?

They sound good. The only thing I would mention is that if it's not ALL isolate then the absorption will not be as good for RNY patients. They pass through our systems too quickly for good absorption of the more complex proteins. So no way to estimate how much you are getting and the expense of buying protein that you may not absorb are the issues for me. You will be getting "some", just no idea how much or little.
The iced tea most likely contains caffeine, unless the label states otherwise. Factor that into your daily caffiene consumption…. they usually contain the equivalent of a cup of coffee per scoop. Email the company to find out for sure. I love the Nectar Lemon Tea, but I cannot have any caffeine…. sigh.

Good News! I was returning my Iced Tea to GNC today because it wasn't 'isolate' (Thanks Shari :D ) and it turns out it is. YES!!
So Dre, I would highly recommend it. They are from GNC and the Lemon Iced Tea is "Whey Cooler" it's $45.99 with a GNC membership. I ended up taking back the GNC brand Lemonaid because I just didn't like it, and ended up getting "IsoKool Whey Protein Kooler" istead. I got the Tropical Fruit flavor (97cals, 2carbs, 1 sugar, 22g protien). It's really good. I find it kinda sweet so I double the water and it reminds me of a pina colada! It was $43.99.
I've read and re-read the entire container of the Lemon Iced Tea to see about the caffeine and I can't see anything on it. No where does it say "Caffeine Free" but there isn't anywhere that list's the caffeine content either so I would deffinetly ask if it's a concern. I don't drink anything else caffeinated so I'm home free there.
Let me know what you think!!! I find my mind is so much more at ease knowing that I'm getting in my protien now!!

Thanks guys
I followed my menu that i made up to get me 60 gr of Protein at the end of the day and i am not going to be able to get that much food down………its hard when you are working and there are distractions :( Plus i am so not hungry yet…………….not complaining :) How much is a GNC membership? They let you try stuff and bring it back if you don't like it………cool!

April, most things that contain caffeine do not state it on the label. Caffeine isn't an actual ingredient, but part of another ingredient (coffee, tea, cocoa). If it contains tea, and doesn't state "decaffeinated tea" in the ingredients then it probably has caffeine.

No problem, I'm glad it helped. I don't find mine thick though. Perhaps its just personal taste. Are you mixing it with 600mls per scoop? If you are and you still find it a bit thick perhaps use a little less power. I'm really loving mine and the tropical one I got…it's like pinapple punch. It certainly takes the pressure off of getting in the protein doesn't it!
