Warning! This post contains graphic wording … read at your own peril, but please help!

Last evening, I ate two slices of fat-free turkey breast slices for a snack (total = 50 calories). I have never had a problem with this before, but last night I did not even finish eating them both when I had severe and sudden nausea. It went on for about an hour before I had a dry heave, after which I felt well enough to not stand by the toilet anymore. I slept well, and this morning felt fine except for a little nauseous. I decided to have a liquid diet today, but gradually thoughout the day my tummy has been getting more and more distended, and my tummy is so tender it hurts to touch it. When I could tolerate it, my stomach felt hard like a rock. I tried taking Gas-X three times today and it was not successful any time. It's so painful I cannot sleep.

I looked up the symptoms for food poisoning, but do not have the lower abdominal cramps or diarrhea, and no fever. Just the bloating and stomach cramping.

Has this happened to anyone after being able to tolerate food – that there is a sudden adverse reaction/intolerance? Is it lap-band related or probably something else? I'm really getting concerned. If my tummy keeps distending, I feel like the band is gonna burst! Wow, it hurts!

It does sound like the meat might have been a little off.

The other thing my Lapbanders mention is that when something gets stuck they will vomit & have "foamies", but you're far more likely to vomit again for the next couple of days.  I suppose the stomach becomes somewhat enflamed with the vomitting process making it a bit more touchy.  Liquids sounds like a good choice for a couple of days.

Janice,

I have had the band for 2 years now and have never experienced your symptoms, maybe the meat was off…I f you have something stuck, you will feel like a seagull trying to get the lump down…which ultimately comes up with a lot of flem….see your doctor…as he/she will be your best counsell on your particular symptoms…good luck!!

Thanks for your responses. I was indeed food poisoning. I'm still not 100%, but at least I'm much better. The doctor gave me some pills to stop the cramping, so that helped. He did say that meat that is off will emit a gas in the tummy, and because of my band, my tummy is already constricted which he thinks would make it more painful than if it were not banded. I don't know how much he really knows, though….it was a family doctor who was recently certified to do fills. Anyway, thanks for your responses.
