i had dinner on thurs eve and felt sick after. i started throwing up bright red blood. it totally freaked me out. i called my surgeon in mexico and he told me to take a nexium. except i throw it up 20 min later. i prob vomitted 10 times in all. not much food in vomit but alot of blood. it went on for about 2 1/2 hours. i ended up going to emerg and did a bunch of blood work. nothing out of whack. vomitting stopped and i have been ok since. i am back of fluids for 3 days and taking nexium for 10 days. has this type of thing every happened to any body. i am seeing my gp this week for follow up.

That sounds nasty Sandi. Were you not prescribed acid reducer after your surgery? I have to take it for the rest of my life. For the first year I take it every day. Then after that I take it every other day. I believe most people do, anyone done in by Dr. Amson does. It is very important that we take them. Keeps your new stomach healthey and acid free.

hi and no i wasn't rx'ed a acid blocker. i thought that was for rny patients. so i will put the question out there "how many people are on pantoloc, prilosec, nexium or something similar". i am on one for the next 10 days and will follow up with my GP about being on one for the long run. sandi

Oh Sandi!
Sorry that I can't offer you any advice on the vomitting or the prescription.
Just wanted to let you know I was thinking of you and hope your feeling better soon.
I do think that you need to get in ASAP with your GP though.
Please keep us posted!

I take it people from out of country arn't prescibed acid blockers. Your poor little tummy needs it to make sure you don't get ulcers which are worse for you after surgery, no room for them in there. It helps in the healing process for your sensitive skin in there as well.

Hi,
Sandi I'm so sorry to hear that you're going through this, I'm glad the vomitting stopped and hope you can get some answers from your GP. Keep us posted!
Now a question for the other bandsters out there – I was banded by Dr. Tang on May 13/09 and I was not prescirbed any kind of acid blocker, but I never suffered from acid reflux before my WLS. Should every bandster take an acid blocker, even if they didn't have acid reflux before surgery?
Thanks,
Sylvia

I was told by Dr A that I would not need an acid blocker after surgery as with the lap band there is no alteration of the stomach and it works the same as it did before just on a smaller capacity. Then again if you had the problem before it's not to say you wouldn't still have it afterwards.
I will occassionally throw up but it is usually due to my consupmtion and nto the surgery. The vomitting blood is scary, how long post surgery was the episode? Glad it has settled down and hoping they can get to the root of the problem.

I was banded last Nov. and I was never told to take acid reducers either. And I was done in Toronto where all they do is lapband and gastric balloon. I, too, think that is just for rny and people with previous refux problems. But take your GP's advice for sure. That bringing up blood does not sound good at all. Take care of yourself.
