Hi all
Well back from Seattle and having RNY on Feb 23. I'm feeling pretty good so far, Dr said all went well however was under longer than expected due to probelm with pancreas and stomach kinda wanting to be attached to each other but he worked it out. Kudos to VM staff, great people to work with and I really luved Dr Hunter.
Minor pain as expected, really just discomfort. Liquids going down well.
Minor problem and looking for some advice… for whey protein isolate, does this work to be heated? or can i only add this to cold liquids? When I've tried warm so far it goes clumpy or has sand like texture.
I need to hit 80grams protein a day and without getting it in this way, I sure cant achieve that target. Any other ideas would be helpful
Question about energy? Now that we are back home I've felt very tired ,, so up for 4hrs or so, then need an hours nap…. is this ok or normal? too much? (I dont tend to sleep through night so may be because of this)
Thanks all
Lana

Hi Lana
Congratulations on your surgery.
It is quite normal to need naps for a while after surgery, your body is still healing. I can remember the napping part very well.
Im sure someone will be able to answer your question on the protein powder, Shari knows a lot about this stuff. May want to try entering it in the search to check the old threads on this as well.,
Wishing you a speedy recovery, and all the best in your journey

Yay! Congrats on having your surgery! I'm only 3 weeks post-op, but feeling great! I'm finding it hard to hit the protien requirement too. However I found this protien drink at London Drugs (I'm sure they have it other places), called "Isopure". I think they have 15-20 grms of protein in about 235mls of clear liquid. The taste is pretty good too. I think they have a grape frost flavour and some other fruity one. I can't tolerate the milky protien drinks well at all, but this stuff helps be get in some fluids too!
Best of luck to you as you heal!

I had similar questions when I first got home too. Shari is truly the wls dictionary!
One thing I learnt is whey protein can NOT be heated! It spoils the protein. It can only be mixed in with cold liquids.
I have problems with milk so I switched to soy. I use silk no sugar and I have no problems with mixing it with my protein drinks.
If anyone has the matrix orange creme (I had to order it online) someone gave me a recipe for it and it does taste very similar to an orange julius, lol. 1 scoop of matrix orange creme, water, ice and crystal light orange sunrise and blend it all up. You may have to adjust the crystal light because a full package of crystal light single is a tad bit too sweet for me!
Here is to a quick recovery!

Okay so now I am confused. You mention that Whey cannot be heated because it spoils the protien. Can it be indirectly headed. I have been adding mine to hot oatmeal and it tastes okay and hopefully is doing me some good. Have I goofed off on this? I have been mixing it with condensed milk.

Hi Lana – Congrats on your surgery – the journey has begun! I am one month post roux en Y today, and like you, have struggled to get all my protein in and have resorted to protein powder to meet this requirement. I was told however that 60 g of Protein per day was sufficient. I am not a milk lover but since I need to have it – I add about 4 ice cubes to the milk and powder and make myself a shake in my Magic Bulllet and this makes it decent. If you cannot tolerate milk then you can try it with soy which will also work.
I too was napping every afternoon sometimes 2-3 hours and I think that is to be expected. We often forget that this is major surgery! I am just back at work this week and without the afternoon nap – I am exhausted by 9 pm. I think this will get better with time. Maureen

I have a desk job so it's not a fair comparison – I was off 3 1/2 weeks which was just right. 6 weeks sounds right for a job with heavy lifting – maybe even up to 8 weeks. M

Thanks Maureen
Appreciate the information, and about the napping. I agree we forget it is major surgery, i just didnt want to feel like hey I'm not doing enough.
Congrats on getting back to work, for me too that will be a good thing but still few weeks to go. They have been great and I have the advantage of starting bit sooner and working pt from home to get back into it.

Be careful about the lifting honestly I thought I was okay a month out from surgery, mind you I had mine done open because of a complication, and I lifted stuff a month after surgery and got an incisional hernia, and now I am going to have to have a surgery which is 2 1/2 hrs to fix it once Ive lost the weight.
So just a word just because you feel better be gentle with yourself.
