Hey Laugh

Just want to check in and tell everyone  this has been a great surgery for me , I had surgery in June on my back and it was a bitch to come back(no pun) from and I was really worried about having to to it again , but I woke up and got up shortly after in recovery ,and walked around ,I could not believe I felt so good . I have walked alot (Dr Malik said the more you move the better and easier it will be) he also said that if you can stick to the fast without cheating it really makes the surgery easier and recovery easier, I drink that gross stuff for 37 days with nothing else , so I guess that helped to . I hope to never see glucernia again.Frown

So I was in Victoria for five days after and went out almost everyday shopping and got my nails done. then got the ok to come home, I am a happy girl to be home, can't afford that city stuff.

i am eating everything that is on my list for the first two weeks and have no problem with eating at all yet, being very careful ( the crushed drugs are horrible) I can start eggs and toast well burnt(just the way I like it next week) can't wait , after a month of yuk , everything tastes so good . All Christmas shopping is done, so I can relax.

So now on to Protein powder…. I only bought one kind and that is whey iso Burst orange cream. the flavor is not bad but the after taste is bitter and gross, I am taking it back. I just can't see drinking something that you don't like.

So I went to http://www.nashuanutrition.com/store/ and you can order samples of many many different kinds , five diff brands and lots of favors , so I phoned to make sure they send to Canada and ordered 90 dollars worth of samples and it cost me 30 dollars shipping . I will let you know how they are. My question is why do we need all this protein drink , I have never been much of a sweet drinker, can't i just eat my protein in meat and milk , yogurt and stuff or will I not be getting enough that way. If I'm having cream of wheat for breakfast do i need to put protein in it .

I am getting enough protein in my body from meat I eat.  Maybe see if you can get a blood test and see were your protein levels are.  Thats what I did.

First saw Dr A in July 2007… Had surgery on November 10, 2011 with Dr Amson..  Starting weight 282 lbs Current weight 262 Lbs 01/18/2012 246 Lbs  04/18/2012 — 225 Lbs

Each surgeon and nutritionist/internist will give you basic information on what they feel is best for you, but from lots of research the general consensus is that Bariatric patients only absorb about 50% nutrition/vitamins/protein as a normal person.

If a normal person is supposed to have 60 grams a day, then a WLS person would need 120 grams a day. The following formula is used by my internist, Dr. Priya Manjoo:

“How to determine grams of protein you need daily when not yet at ideal weight: Subtract 120 from your current weight. Multiply that answer by .25 and add it to 120"

So for me: 194 – 120 = 74 x .25 = 18.5 + 120 = 138.5 grams

My NUT (not well versed in WLS) had to take my word on the amount of protein I am supposed to be taking and now better understands why I eat 5 to 6 times a day and not the "3 main meals and one snack" that she wanted me to!

I find in order to consume that amount of protein a day, I do need to supplement normal foods (chicken, cheese etc) with a protein drink. I like the Premier Protein drink from Costco – 30 grams of protein, only 160 cals.

Thank you for this information Trish.  I was wondering on how to calculate my protein for daily portion.

I find that it is great to get lots of protein in me as well.  I make sure I have the supplement drink (Costco or anything convenient) but also I have protein powders with my morning well.  I am staying away from carbs – mostly because breaks make me feel ill.  But also I find my energy lasts longer with a lot of protein to keep me going.  Only bad part I found is that if you stay away from carbs you may need to find a way to get more fiber in your diet.
