Just thought I'd pass this along. I got a call last week from my GP's office. I had some blood work he wanted to go over. It turns out it was not as scary as I though lol, but something that post ops should be aware of. Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin that our body will synthesize (as vitamin D3) when sun exposure is adequate, and stores it in body fat. When you have wls you drop body fat pretty quickly which in turn depletes Vitamin D stores. Low levels of vitamin D can lead to bone mineral deficiencies, and inflammatory disease, among other things. Check out this article:

My GP recommends 1000-3000 IU daily (1000 for spring/summer and up it to 3000 for fall/winter). They are tiny little oil gel caps that are easy to swallow. I had blood work done just before surgery and everything was great and then three months after surgery my Vitamin D has dropped to 10 points below the low end of the range. Just something to be aware of and it's not a bad idea to take it anyway living in the North where we don't get quite enough sunshine anyway.
Cheers
