CBI Health Group has announce the opening of their Weight Wellness Program in their Downtown Victoria location.

The CBI Weight Wellness Program draws from the most current research on weight management, behavioural and lifestyle change, psychology, and exercise and nutritional science. The program is delivered by an integrated team of health care professionals including Physicians, Registered Dietitians, Physiotherapists, Exercise Professionals, and Counsellors.

Through an in depth multidisciplinary assessment, the team identifies the core factors associated with weight gain and associated health problems as well as the barriers which need to be addressed for long-term improvement.

Dr Trevor Campbell, Lead Program Physician, states: “obesity is often a complex problem that is caused by a combination of behavioral, emotional, social, genetic, and at times medical factors. Most diet and weight loss programs fail because they don’t address the whole person. One of the enormous benefits of working with a team of professionals is that each factor that is contributing to the individuals weight challenge can be assessed and attended to. This allows the team to customize each client’s program to meet their individual needs, goals and challenges, enabling them to navigate towards a sustainable solution. ”

In addition to the one-on-one assessments, clients will receive a Computerized Metabolic Test which allows the development of a personal eating plan for steady, sustainable and healthy weight loss.

Following the initial assessments, clients will participate in a 24 week program which includes the following components:

  • Exercise and activity sessions: Each client receives personal and small group training sessions at the CBI Health Centre’s well equipped medical fitness area
  • Small group interactive education: Weekly education sessions cover a variety of important topics to fully equip clients in their health journey.
  • One-to-One follow up and guidance: Throughout the program, clients will meet regularly with Weight Wellness team Physicians, Dietitians, Physiotherapists, and Exercise Professionals.
  • Monthly healthy living outings and walking club: Regular fitness and healthy living activities will be available outside the CBI Health Centre, in order to help integrate new skills and knowledge into day-to-day life.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Training: For many individuals who have had long term struggles with weight gain, there can be significant underlying psychological or emotional barriers to sustained lifestyle and eating change.  One of the best ways to address these issues is through Cognitive Behavioral Training (CBT). The CBT component will help clients develop a healthier relationship with food and their bodies, and the tools to deal with setbacks. This component of the program is often the link that brings all of the pieces together and prepares clients for successful and lasting change

Following the completion of the 24 week program, clients will receive ongoing support through a free 6 month support program, which provides access to a variety of services and benefits designed to help support them to achieve permanent weight loss and health improvement.

It is CBI Health Group’s goal to open Weight Wellness Programs in CBI Clinics across British Columbia and Canada.

This sounds like a wonderful program, I wish I was living in Victoria….cuz at this point I am finding that I am needing all the support I can get.  I don't have a problem with the exercise regime it is more the emotional eating that is starting to play a role on me once again and I just don't know how I am going to conquer this and not let it get me back into the old habits that I used to have before I started my new journey in life.

I was thinking as I was reading this article that it would be neat if there was anyway that people from say the north such as I could somehow dial into some of these meetings via video conference.

Lizzette makes an interesting point and a question comes to my mind.  Why is it that we will go to great lengths to fix our body so it will deal properly with food but not be able to fix what is going on inside our heads?  I have heard lately that Dr. A and T recommending that people need to see a counsellor or shrink before they get a lapband.  But this isn't so for the other kinds of surgery.  Is it that the varieties of issues that cause us to eat are too large and too many?  Or is it something to keep us busy while waiting for the surgery?

Hi Everyone:

Lorne Friesen invited me for a coffee today. He spend some time filling me in on CBI's new program here in Victoria. I took away some very important points.

  • Lorne told me the heart of their program is all about changing behaviour. Finally a health program that is taking the long term view and not the quick fix fad diet. They're using Cognitive Behaviorial For weight Management as a key compnenet of their program.
  • He also emphaised that many extended health plans will pay for part or all of their program.
  • Also CBI is considering some very innovative ideas including Web Casting, interactive web site tools and other various options that would make at least part of their program if not all available from a distance.
  • The program is for Pre-ops, post-ops (long term follow-up) and none surgery clients who feel they can loose weight and sustain the weight loss with support and help.

I'll fill you in with details as I receive them.

I would like to know costs?  Right now I have no extended medical as no one will give it to me because I already have too many pre existing conditions.  I also have bad credit so getting a loan or monthly payments is probably not an option.  No where does it talk about costs of the program.  Sounds very interesting and like it is something that could benefit both me and my fiance.

Looking forward to hearing more.

Sounds like a very positive program. I am glad that the program is doing cognitive behaviour.  Glad to know that there could be a distance component to it also.

I took a look at their website, and it says that MSP will pay for the Doctor's visits, and Extended Health Coverage may also pay some or sometimes all of the fees for this type of service.  Do you know how or what type of benifit this would be under the Ext. Health?

It seems like this is a pretty interesting program.  And I'm surprised that the cost is so low!  Not that $2500 bucks is something I have laying around gathering dust!  I'd have guessed it was going to be at least 5-7k for something so individually tailored.  I'd really like to utilize a resource like that at this point in my journey.

HI Francina:

I'm not sure which Ext Health plans cover, but I did read some of thee other material that Lorne gave me. It says on your 1st contact with CBI, they'll check your Ext Health plan coverage through your provider and tell you what you'd be covered for and what would not be covered.

Not ventured, noting gained – just don't make a decision unless you're absolutely sure and always no matter what you buy (cars, vacuum cleaners etc.) …sign nothing until you've done your due diligence. Everything I see re CBI looks great, otherwise I wouldn't even carry their news announcement, but I'm a pretty conservative guy when it comes to spending $2500. :)

Hi all,

I thought I should join the forum to be able to answer questions and provide clarification if needed.

As Ron mentioned, the program is covered by extended health plans. As each plan is different, we can't say how much is covered. My experience has shown that some insurerers will cover the entire amount (RCMP for example), whle others only a portion.  If your plan includes physiotherapy, or dietitian you will receive some coverage. We are happy to review your plan with you prior to making any commitment.

In addition, people who are on long term disability insurance provided through an employer such as manulife etc, may be able to get the program covered if there is a reasonable chance that the program will assist the individual to return to work.

While we recognize that $2,500 isn't pocket change, we do believe that the program provides very good value, particularly when compared to most commercial wt loss/diet programs. We are also trying to decrease the financial barrier for people by ofering payment plans etc.

As others have mentioned, unless individuals make a connection with the emotional/psychological drivers of eating, and develop tools to address these issues, weight loss efforts are usually short term at best. For this reason, we have included a strong Cognitive Behavioral Training (CBT) component in the program. Dr Trevor Campbell, who is our lead physician in the program will be leading this component of the program. He is very passionate about helping people in this way, and has a very strong background.

We are starting in Victoria, and plan to open the program in
other CBI Health Centres in BC and the rest of Canada. In addition, we will have a variety of web based tools such as podcasts, online
counseling/CBT available once our new web site is launched in the New
Year.

Finally, while we wil be doing some advertising, we simply can't compete with the marketing budgets of the big commercial programs complete with Hollywood stars, and really depend on word of mouth to get the word out. So if you feel inclined, we greatly appreciate it when people forward info about the program to others who may benefit.

Sincerely,

Lorne
