Well Boy am I frustrated now. Seems that every where I go to get help for my health I hit a stone wall. First all the stuff with WLS now I cant even get good help for my Rheumatoid Arthritis. I have a Rheumatologist who I dont trust and dont like at all. Its a long story. So I asked for a referel to a new one and apparently the rheumatologists are doing the same thing as the family doctors. IF you already have one then no one else will see you. So getting a second opinion is not allowed. I thought it was our RIGHT to recieve GOOD medical treatment. I thought it was our RIGHT to get second opinions. If this is true then how am I supposed to do that with this new rule. So guess I just have to live with it. I will NOT go back to the Rheumatologist I have so guess I just dont get treatment. I am so frustrated and angry with the whole thing. Its just not fair.
Ok thanks for listening to my rants.

Hi Roxeanne:
I think it is bizarre that another R.A. doctor won't give you a second opinion. I can't explain that one. Does Dr. Amson have any pull to help you see someone else or this there any possibility of seening an R.A. doctor in Vancouver when you go to Richmond. Maybe you could ask the surgeon in Richmond that you are going to see if he has connections. Just a few thoughts. Let me know what happens. You can send me a PM.

THanks Frances.
I see Dr A on the 14th so will ask him what he thinks I should do. Apparently RAs are operating the same as Family Dr's. If you already have an RA then they wont see you.

I'm sorry to hear you are going through so much with trying to get in for a 2nd opinion for seeing a rheumatologist. Hope the doc you see on the 14th will be able to help get you into a 2nd reumatologist.
Hang in there

Sorry to hear you are having troubles – I know you have likely done this but have you talked directly with your current physician to ask for another opinion to put your feelings at rest. If the RH doc feels like they are in the driver's seat they may be more obliging to help you out. Remembering that these docs have egos the size of a large truck, it may be of more use to you to take that at your advantage.
Good luck,
Blake

That would be a good idea Blake if this Rheumatologist was easy to talk to and reasonable. Unfortunately that is not the case with my Rheumatologist. I have absolutely no trust or confidence in him. Fortunately I am not in too much discomfort right now most of the time so I am just going to leave it. We will see what happens later.
Just frustrated that I cant change doctors when I want to. But I understand why.

I don't think that is fair, What if were something more sensitive like a gyne dr? Do you still have no say? You should have trust and be comfortable with every doctor that is supposedly there to help you. Your GP should be more understanding of your situation. It makes no sense, I feel for you.
I wish you luck with this

THis is in NO way my GP's fault. He put in the referel to a new doctor and the new doctor wouldnt accept me as I already have a rheumatologist. So it isnt my GP's fault. I have a fantastic GP that I would trust my life with.

You in no way offended me. I just wanted to make it clear that this frustration had nothing to do with my GP. In my opinion I have the worlds greatest physician and I wouldnt trade him for nothin. I appreciate your thoughts and ideas.

Hi
It is not a question of not being denied a second opinion.
My doctor told me a few weeks ago that availability to RA's doctors is severely limited in Victoria. There were three practicing in Victoria. One recently retired, one went to working one day a week so is not taking more patients and that leaves the one who is full time who is probably the one that you have been to.
Your best chance to see anyone else is to get a referral to a doctor on the Mainland.

thanks Amethyst.
All I know is my doctor put a referel into another RA doctor. I have Dr Baker and I know there is Dr Northcott at the Arthritis society, and then there is this one that my dr put the reference into. All of them here in Victoria. Its possible that one or both the others are working only part time. However, what this other dr told my doctor is that they will not take on a patient that already has a Rheumatologist. Its ok I have accepted it now and am prepared just to deal with this on my own.

Hi again
Dr. Baker is one that is full time. I understand that there is a many month wait for new patients to see him.
I have been a patient of his for several years and I certainly am aware that he is not easy to deal with. You just need to find a way to get around him (at least for as long as you have to see him). Making him defensive just backfires big time. I know. I actually have managed (him) better over the last while!
Everything on this journey is a learning experience it seems.
Good luck.

Thank you for this. At this point I dont think I have upset Dr Baker in any way. I have seen him twice. What set me off is my second appointment he had lost my file (not surprisingly given his disaster of an office). He had no idea who I was or why I was there. So I had to go through everything all over again. Then when I finally got to talking to him about the unsuccessfullness of the medicine he gave me he wouldnt listen to me at all. I told him the reactions (quite severe) that I had to the medicine and he said well just go back down to one tablet a day. That bothered me because I believe I was having an allergic reaction and even going back to one could cause problems. Then when I said that he said fine I can give you and he named a drug that had the root word Sulpha in it somewhere. Fortunately I knew enough to ask him if that had Sulpha drugs in it and he said yes deffinately. Well I am allergic to Sulpha. If he had had my file he would have known that. Since he didnt I feel he should have asked me what i was allergic to before recomending any drug. I guess this made me lose confidence and trust in his medical treatment. I have many other serious health issues and really cant afford to have a dr make a mistake because they cant be bothered to be a little more organized.
Anyways sorry that kind of went off in a rant. Since you have him as a dr and seem to get through to him and work with him do you have any suggestions. How to get him to actually listen to me and care about my fears and concerns. I have worked with drs with really bad bed side manners and this is different then even that. I would love to be able to work with him (since I have no other option) and have some success in controling the pain from the RA. I know I am a very complicated case and it may even be possible that there is nothing out there for me. I just would like him to talk to me and explain it to me. How do I get him to do that? Thanks for any suggestions you may have.
