I am just wondering if someone could please tell me what it is like when you DUMP? Yesterday morning I had a scrambled egg, small protein pancake and a half a piece of Beef bacon for breakfast and I felt just fine, but then about 2 1/2 hrs later I had a snack of 1/2 a banana and some peanut butter and not too long after that I ended up getting sharp uncomfortable pains in my upper stomach I would say just under my rib cage. These pains were so uncomfortable that I couldn't sit or stand and I only felt a little ease when I laid flat on my back. I was irritable, cold and shaky and was in pain for at least 3 to 4 hrs until it subsided or eased up a little so that I was feeling a little better but not 100%. I am wondering if this is what one calls DUMPING? I have also had this one other time as well, but I would say that this is about the closest to dumping that I have come in the 15 months since surgery.
I would appreciate any comments on this topic…..:)

That almost sounds like a gallbladder attack. I have had 2 in my life and it felt like what you just described. The last time it happened, I had an ultrasound and it indicated that i don't have gallstones but a small kink in the gallbladder. Anyway I read somewhere on here that gallstones are very common after extreme weightloss. Just an idea. I have heard dumping described as cold sweats, diarrhea, and vomiting, chills, "wanting to go from both ends at the same time", dizziness, and headache.

Thanks Henner and yes that is what I have heard dumping being described as….I can easily say that it wasn't a gall bladder attack because I no longer have a gall bladder, had it removed over 20 yrs ago….so really I don't know what to say it could have been unless it was a blockage of some kind.

Lol I was wondering, as I was typing that , if you may have already had your gallbladder out. I hope you nevr have it again if that's what dumpling is like for you because that sounds awful. I recently found out that dumping can happen for us sleevers too. That was surprising to me so i hope I never have to experience it. Hope you are doing well! Congrats on the Triathalon too!
Cheers

Dumping – for me, comes on when I eat something to high in fat or sugar. It is an absolutely horrible feeling, I get sweaty, heavier pulse ,sick to my stomach feeling, I have never had diarreha from it, but have felt nauseated. I dont know whether to stand up, sit down, or lay down it's different for everyone I believe. For me it takes an hour or two to pass, nothing makes it better other than time to pass. Everytime I've had it Ive felt oh my goodness what have I dont I will never eat that ever again, of course time sometimes goes by, and try it again and will get the same result.
I still get this 2 1/2 years as a post op.

That kind of sounds like what I had on Sunday….like you said I didn't know whether to sit, stand or lay flat and it did take several hours for it to pass. I was also shaky, cold and felt a little sick to my stomach as well, but oh the pain I felt was awful..I am thinking maybe what I was experiencing was a form of dumping just like what you describe. When you suggest that fried foods causes you to dump, I am thinking that the bacon that I ate is what caused me to go through this painful day…even though the bacon was beef and it was locally grown and cut and not very fatty, I guess that it really doesn't take too much for us to dump.
I want to thank all of you for your input to my dilema, it really does help to talk to one another and to get feedback on issues that we are experiencing.

I know it is a little late but could it be your body's reaction to the race you run last weekend. It may take a while for your system to process the stress that you put it through. So when the adrenalin from the race wore off your physical symptoms showed up. BTW, did you put on any weight yet? Remember taking care of yourself is a good thing.

I actually don't think it was from doing the race, Blake…..I am still leaning towards it being a form or dumping and I am thinking more and more that it is from the beef bacon that I ate for breakfast (even though it was only 1/2 a slice, which now I now it doesn't take much for our bodies to dump if something is not agreeing with us). It is a hard thing to figure out….
And yes I did gain 1 lb according to the dr's scale on Monday morning, but will weigh again on Friday. And I am trying really hard to cut back on the exercise but am having a really hard time with it….My BIGGEST problem is that I just can't sit still unless I am at work…lol…otherwise I am on the go constantly….for example the other night I went down to the U-pickem Strawberry place and picked 3 icecream buckets of strawberries then I came home and made a batch of jam and then last night I finished off my jame makeing (3 batches). I just have so much more energy than I used too and I just can't seem to figure out how to control it…lol

I just thought I'd chime in and say that my reaction (dumping) is IDENTICAL to Suzannes (well put! totally describes the feeling…pulse, sweat, nausea, cant get comfortable). It really sucks. I've only had it a few times and related to sugar (darn pre-mix protein shakes) and only lasts about 45 mins or so.

It sounds like you dumped and the feeling is horrible when it happens.
I would think that the bacon could have caused the dumping also did you have anything else in your stomach before you put the bacon in it. I find if I mix too many different things my stomach reacts to it.
Just make a mental note of it, and I know some people try some kinds of food later another time to see if it was dumping, but once I dump on something I usually stay away from it.

But you still might want to know what caused it… it could have been anything that morning, or just the combo. I eat bacon at least once every two weeks.. my weekend treat. I`ve not dumped from it yet. We are all different! Maybe dissect what you ate that morning, and try each one individually some time; that may give you a clue. Then again, it might have been a combination of things and you will never find out….!!!
So you know it`s not your gallbladder (even though I used to get phantom pains after mine was out, for several years, from one specific item), you aren`t upchucking or suffering on a regular basis, so don`t worry about it; it may never happen again with whatever caused it.

i was talking to a friend on Friday who informed me that the butcher (where I bought the bacon from) puts sodium nitrite in some of his products which apparently causes severe intestinal gastric pains (which I can boldly say is what I was experiencing that morning) therefore she told me I should either ask him if he put in that particular product or I should read the label for the ingredients. If it is in there I will be sure not to eat it again as trust me I don't want to go thru that senerial again it was definitely not fun for me lol

So I finally stopped by the local butcher shop where I bought the beef bacon from asked the question: "Do you put nitrates in your beef bacon" and the answer I got back was: yes we do. Therefore, this gave me the answer to my querry of whether or not I suffered from dumping when I ate the bacon. So it turns out that I didn't experience "dumping" but more than likely I had a reaction from the nitrate which I am told can cause severe intestinal gastric pains, which I definately suffered from….therefore I will say that I won't be enjoying any of that yummy beef bacon in the near future, cuz I am not going to go through that painful experience again!!!!
Hope everyone has a terrific long weekend!!!
