Hey all!
Wow. I am a post op now. Pretty crazy! I was wondering how much you all ate in your first week to two weeks after surgery? I am 5 days post op and I am finding that I can eat 1/4 cup and I'm scared!!!!! should I stick to just the 3tbsp every 2 hours the book(wls for dummies) recommends or should I just eat 1/4 cup every 3 -4 hours??
This is all so confusing and even though I have tonnes of information it's mostly psychological. I keep feeling like if I am feeling hunger then I have screwed something up. Did anyone else feel this way? I just want this to work. I have tried everything else and this was my last option.
Thanks for all your continued support :)

Also I am happy to report that I pooped yesterday and am now a pooping machine!

Eat only as much as your stomach is comfortable with.  There is no `set`amount to eat so don`t push eating a larger amount just because some book says you should eat that amount.  I only ate very small amounts, less than 1/4 cup per 'meal' for many months; your body feeds off the fat you have stored anyways.

I still try to maintain small meals, 2 snack and at least one protein shake per day to keep on track.  Breakfast, weekend treat, was 1 egg, .5 oz cheese, 2 slices bacon.  Normal breakfast is 2 heaping tsp quinoa flakes, about 1/3 cup water, nuked, and it makes Cream of Wheat type cereal.  Then a protein shake in morning, sometimes 10-12 almonds for snack, or a bit of fruit (small banana, 1/2 apple, whatever).  Lunch on Friday was 1/2 stick turkey pepperoni, 1/4 c chickpea salad.  Had the other 1/2 stick and 1/4 c chickpea salad for snack.  Dinner was one souvlaki skewer and about 1/3 c stir fry.  No breads, no pita, rice etc.  I had something later, I think I had a s/f choc. pudding with a few peanuts thrown in.  I'm about 18 months out and about 5 lbs from goal, having lost about 120 lbs.  I will try to maintain the smaller meals as long as I can as I don't want to stretch something. But that's just me and lots of people eat more and eat breads, etc as well.  We are each individual and different and find different things that work for you.  It's not an exact science.

You will also find different tolerances.  Sometimes things just don't sit right in the stomach, next time you try it, it's fine.  You never know.  You might also find different things you crave.  I craved fish the 3rd week after surgery and indulged in a meal of 1/2 scallop and was full.  Or 1/2 a small salmon pinwheel stuffed with seafood…. you just never know!

Just make sure you get in your water (as much as you can) and vitamins and follow the no water before-after meals, etc.  There is a great article on the homepage, right hand side, that will clarify a lot of things you should know and do post op.  I took a quick check – it was there last week, can't seem to see it now.  Ron might be able to resurrect it; it was from a doctor and explained the hows, whys, whens of eating, exercise, drinking, etc.  Ron?  can you bring it forward or something – it. was a really good article.  Sorry can't remember the name of it.

Thank You so much! I like the food journal, it shows a variety of foods and at the stage I am at now there isn't much variety! lol. I can't wait until I can tolerate actual solid foods. I will take a look at that article!!

I'm glad you mentioned there is no set amount because I was getting scared with eating 1/4 of a cup. I will just eat until I get that full burp and thats it. I find eating 2-3 tbsp every 2 hours makes me full and not dizzy. :)

Thanks so much again :).

2-3 tbsp every couple of hrs is about normal for your stage!  Variety… hmm.. cottage cheese, yoghurt, sugar free pudding, popsicles, soft fish (scallops, halibut, etc. shouldn`t hurt you after a couple of weeks past your surgery) – at least it didn`t me.  There`s a canned brand of chili out there..silver label, can`t remember the name…. lots of different varieties by the same company on the shelves, but the silver label is low fat; it`s not too bad.  Laughing Cow cheese.  Applesauce.  Try a bit of cinnamon on your applesauce for variety.  Omelet soon if not already.  Chew everything thoroughly.  And try to take about 15 minutes to finish a `meal`as your jaws and brains need that chewing to feel full.  I  chew gum now, but just don`t swallow it as you will be in pain apparently.  Not gonna try it just to see what will happen.

And of course, I tell everyone to go for good quality protein shakes; fruit flavours with lots of ice; coffee flavour with cold coffee, milk, cinnamon, ice cubes, stevia for a `latte`…….  and of course, always read your food plan suggestions from your doctor or nutritionist and read a lot of the back posts here as you will find lots of good ideas and suggestions.

And one last thing….no matter what the books tell you, stay away from sugars, breads, rice, potatoes – `bad white stuff`as long as you can.  The bad carbs basically make you crave more sugary stuff and you end wanting more carbs…..and they can cause weight gain.  Read recipe sites; find alternatives – ie zucchini strips in lasagna instead of noodles, etc.  Make it a fun challenge as it`s good to keep away from those things `for the rest of your life`or close to it!!!

So a few suggestions if you haven`t thought of them!

Hey Kerri, my surgery twin!  I pooped yesterday too (a little) but alas, no pooping machine yet. :( I was starting to freak out too about the amount of food I was eating as everyday it seems I can almost double and I am only a week out at this point.  ARGHHH…..I was kinda hoping that hunger would be gone and it has me really nervous. I am still getting lots of cravings but I know that is in my head…….wonder if there is surgery for the head????

Hi Kerri!

That would be so great!  I was so worried when I lost your email address.  Are you hanging out in Victoria or on the mainland? Also, do you have your follow-up appt with Dr. A?  I haven't booked it yet…….yikes.  Everytime I tried to get through, something came up. Oops.  Are you finding that your gut is still hurting a bit……the first five or six days were brutal.  I am ready to get back to work…….don't think I will make a good patient lol.

Hi Blake,

Its been a hell of a journey for me……almost 12 years.  I was really questioning things last week after surgery but every day is 100% better than the day before. Alas, we do not choose our surgery twins, we are just blessed with them!

Hey!! I know I feel the same. I feel like I have so much energy and "taking it easy" isn't helping! Dr Amson said I can start going for "light" walks. So I will do that lol. I'm in Victoria another week "taking it easy" lol and then I go back to the mainland over the weekend. I saw Dr A today and he says I am fine and since my plumbing is working he's not worried. Yeah my gut still hurts a bit, but I'm trying not to squish it or bend it. He siad that feeling of "sore numbness" will go away in about a week.

By The Way:  I emailed you!!!! :D
