Low White Blood Platlet Count

Has anyone as a post op experienced problems with their white platlet count being low? The last time I had my blood work done my count came back at 2.9 so now my GP is a little concerned and has had me going for a blood test every week. My count still has not come up to normal which he told me was anything over 4. When I was down to see Dr. M for my follow up appt Oct 4th I asked him about it and he said that it wouldn't be from the surgery itself and he really didn't know what it was from. So he has referred me back to see Dr. Manjou the intinest which she is going to review my file and call me on Wednesday but from briefly talking to her today on the phone she said that I may have to come down to see her in person. When asking my GP what it meant that my platlets were low he says and it means that my bone marrow is not working properly….which now I am quite concerned.. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Lizzette:

As far as I know low white blood cells would almost never be caused directly from WLS surgery. Normal white blood cells would be between 4000 and 10,000 per microliter of blood. Low white blood cells below 2500 per microliter of blood can be caused by some of the following:

1. Serious infection some where in the body
2. Manufacturing of white blood cells is compromised some how (bone marrow)
3. Vitamin deficiencies – Get your doctor to check for low Vit D & Vit B ( they normally don't check these – you have to remind them and ask for them to test for Vit levels)
4. Some medications – eg antibiotics (have you had an infection recently & used antibiotics to treat it?)
5. Don't forget viral infections – have you had a bad cold or the flu lately?

There are several other reasons for low white blood cells, but usually uncommon – so for the time being it sounds like you're on the right track with the referral to an Internists. If you're seeing you GP in the next week or so, get him/her to verify that they've checked you blood levels for Vitamin deficiency.

In the mean time, with low white blood cells, you're more susceptible to infections, so stay away from sick people with colds and flues, wash your hands lots, clean and protect any cuts or abrasions you get and if you notice infection signs or symptoms, go to a clinic or you doctor right away.

Thanks for the info Ron,  I am just awaiting a phone call from the internist, she said she would call me today to discuss my issue.  I have one more blood test to complete for my GP next week and once that is done and he calls me back for a follow up I will be sure to ask him about the checking for low vit or vit deficiency.
