hi everyone, i'm nearly three years post op and am struggling so much.  i've even been putting off coming back to the site because im feeling like a failure and am so mad at myself.  its as though i need to start from the beginning again and really don't know where to start.  can you please help me along here….

i feel like i've ruined my 'tool', i have been trying everything.  EVERYTHING.  working my ass off, trying to eat right..even joined weight watchers to try and maintain some balance as of recently i feel like my eating has gone right off track.  nothing i do seems to work, i'm so discouraged and just don't know where to start.

have you experienced this?  do you have any advice/wisdom to share?  it's as though everything i've ever learned about post WLS has just dropped out of my head and i'm feeling overwhelmed.

please help me along here.

thanks so much.

Start journaling your food and check out the protein, fat, carbs ratio that most programs give you.  I bet your carb intake is way up.  Are you eating bread, crackers, rice, potatoes, pasta?  If you are, cut them out – now – and you will probably find you will lose weight.  The 'bad white stuff' converts to sugars and make you crave more sugars, so it's a no win situation.

Up your proteins, up your water, lower your fruits and eat your veggies.  Find substitutes that you can use in 'regular' food recipes – ie use zucchini strips in place of lasagna noodles, spaghettis squash for spaghetti, etc.  Search the net for recipes using health alternates.  Go search 'wls friendly recipes' and you will get a bunch of sites available to help you be successful.

You haven't broken it; you've just been abusing it with carbs probably.  Try the 5 day pouch test – search it – and you will probably be able to slay the carb monster.

I am not a post op yet but I have been following and researching this stuff for a while – also I just got a stern reminder from Dr. Amson this afternoon about being a post op successfully.  He was telling me that this tool doesn't work without exercise.  You don't mention any exercise in your post so you do need to include that in your journal.

From my view, and a disclaimer here – I am a huge exercise proponent, most of the posts are from people who think they will lose weight by adjusting their diet.  Places like weight watchers are around to make money; they are not around  to actually help you keep weight off.  If they did they would be out of business.  Besides how many of us have tried weight loss groups prior to surgery and were so successful with that attempt that we didn't need the surgery?  I tried; it didn't work for me.

Finally, welcome back and thanks for returning.  You are not a failure but just in need of a few friends.  This is a great place for help.  There are a whole bunch of people here with lots of experience.  You are most welcome here as a post op and a friend.

Being you mentioned that you`d tried everything – working your ass off, different `diets`, etc., and the problems with re-gains are usually noticed once people start eating carbs, I would still suggest that you try journaling your food choices and removing the carbs.  Then find a good balance between your proteins, fats and carbs, relearn the `rules`of 5-5-5, not drinking for at least 15 minutes before a meal, and up to 2 hrs after (and of course, not drinking with a meal)  as well as continuing your exercise.  The combination of these things should restart your weight loss journey.

Exercise is a large part of the new healthy life style but re-thinking what you allow to go in your mouth is very important as if you don`t stop the cravings you will gain, pretty well guaranteed, exercise or not.  I haven`t noticed a lot of posts from the thousands I`ve read that indicate people aren`t exercising and are only relying on having a smaller stomach to make their goals.  I believe many people may be exercising, but that`s just not where their questions are; they are asking diet, nutrition, questions from this site, but don`t need to know how many push ups to do; they want to know what foods, what vitamins are good for us.

Doing the 5dpt certainly isn`t going to hurt you; it was designed exactly for the purpose of giving you that full sensation you are familiar with from when you were a newbie and for killing the carb cravings.  Use the internet and research wls food choices, bmi, exercise, etc to give you the information you need to be successful.

And, WW may be there to make money, but I hate to tell you, doctors do it for money too………I haven`t seen a WW meeting or a doctor that will perform their weight loss services for free.  Sorry, but that`s a fact.
