Well the plastic surgeons office called me back this morning, MSP has refused my skin removal on my stomach and the plastic surgeon will not even give me a quote until I get to 150 lbs. They said the surgeon will not look at me regarding surgery until I am at 150 lbs weight for removal of skin on my stomach. My gastric bypass surgeon had figured that my stomach weighs 20 lbs worth of skin as I was close to 400 lbs at time of gastric bypass surgery. They also said that they will not do this surgery in the hospital has to be done in a private clinic, I told them Im not comfortable having this type of surgery in a clinic but they said this is how this surgeon does his surgeries. So Im basically giving up hope of having surgery for the skin removal as Im 230 lbs now, Ive lost 150 lbs in weight but the receptionist said call us back when you are close to weighing 150 lbs then we will bring you back in see what the surgeon thinks and then do up a quote. She also said should I choose to go private pay that my hernias repair will not be covered by MSP that doesnt seem right. Surely hernia repairs are not considered cosmetic as well, when they are causing pain.
In any event I have an appointment with the surgeon that assisted with my gastric bypass surgery, as my surgeon retired last year, I see the surgoen next month re: my hernias and continuing 24/7 heartburn that I have had since September 23rdand will see what he thinks.

I am so sorry to hear that Suzanne, that really sucks! Can you appeal? What about a different specialist?
That's the first time I'ver ever heard of having to do things in a private clinic in BC?!
What do they say about the heartburn?

Someone told me not to appeal as unless they say its medically necessary for the skin removal they want pay for it.
Heartburn – I had the barium swallow xray this morning at the hospital, and the xray doctor said there are no obstructions but that he did see acid reflux and he doesn't know what is causing it. He said the next step is to get a scope done. So the gastroentrologist is supposed to have this information by Monday and then I will see the gastroentrologist and he will decide on when the scope get done.
The xray results will be sent to Dr. Amson as well, and Ive asked for a copy from the hospital when its ready they will call me.
Still have heartburn 24/7 since September 23rd.

On Monday (Oct 18) I just had my second plastic surgery procedure, thighplasty, the first procedure was a lower body lift (Sept 2008), both were done at the Victoria Surgical Clinic and the treatment and care that I have received has been nothing but first class. It is at this same clinic that Dr. Amson and Dr. Tang are now doing the mid-band. Due to the fact that these procedures are self pay is why they can be done at a private clinic, plus they are procedures which you can go home same day or with a one night stay. Should the procedure require a stay longer than just a one night stay, they can not be done in the private clinic; if you unexpectedly have to stay longer you will be transported to one of the hospitals. My advise is to check out the clinic in question, but do not rule it out just because it is private.

I went and seen the gastroentrologist re: my heartburn that continues on just past a month now, the barium xray did not show obstructions, strictures but it did show reflux. He is going to now try me on Prevacid and if that doesnt work, he said I will need a ph (acid test) where they put a tube up your nose and down into your stomach for 24 hours and check the acid levels. He said I may need surgery to tighten the top of my stomach to my esophagus so that the acid doesnt come through, and he said it could be from the hernias but he said to see the gastric bypass surgeon.

Suzanne, hang on!
Heartburns are so painful.
For the plastic surgery… you know, I think it makes sense. If you lose more weight after the surgery I am pretty sure more skin would add up.
You say that you want to lose another 50-60 pounds. Work at it. I know it is hard, but I believe in you. You can do it. Reach the goal you are thinking at. if it is 170 or … Then see the surgeon and tell them that you reached your goal. That you are ready for the surgery.
If however, you are at your goal, then fight for it!

I'm going to have my hernias repaired early next year, there is nothing they can do about the heartburn. I'm hoping the hernias being repaired will help the heartburn to settle down.

Hi Suzanne,
I've been thinking about you and how your doing. I so feel for you girl! That is horrible.
I just thought I would throw this out there for you….not sure if you have tried it. A friend of mine was over and had heartburn and asked me if I had tums. I didn't but I had my liquid calcium so I gave her some of that. She said that it did wonders! She could not believe how fast and how well it worked. Then the other day, my husband had heartburn and so I gave him some too and he was totally amazed as well! He also found that drinking coffee (reg or decaf) gave him the heartburn so once he stopped drinking it, the heartburn went away.
I'm sure you've tried many different things, but just thought this may help.
Take care…

Hi Jodi
I haven't taken anything like Gaviscon or Tums because the sugar content, I dump so easily, actually worse now than in the beginning.
Someone mentioned trying flaxseed that it worked for them when they were pregnant with heartburn, so going to try this, Im willing to try anything to get rid of it.
I don't drink coffee, tea, or alcohol haven't had any of that since before surgery.
Thanks for the info Jodi and for thinking of me, I will try anything to get rid of the heartburn.
