Well….its exactly 1 month since my RNY surgery (wow).  Its been a hellish month, I wont lie.  A lot of pain (and I'm generally a bit of a 'tough guy' when it comes to pain, so this has really takin me for a spin.  Feeling the need to eat (or at least eat something with flavour and texture) but when ANYTHING is consumed, I have 20 minutes of groaning and regret.

I'm back at work a week early and am feeling much better!  No dumping, no vomiting (yay). The pain has subsided but I still cant eat many things (as soon as I eat them, I feel nauseated), so I've been sticking to the basics.  The thing is….prior to surgery I had 3 WEEKS of protein shakes and water….after surgery…I had 3 weeks of water, fruit puree, small glasses of protein shakes and soft, bland, pureed foods and tea.  I have JUST started to be able to eat some meats and soft veggies.  I HAVE LOST 1 LB.  Thats right…..1 lb.  That's 6 weeks of eating NOTHING or at least hardly anything for 1 stinking pound of weight loss (I even went up 2 lbs for a few days!!!).

Is this normal?  My surgeon doesnt seem surprised…but any YouTube blog on RNY….is like 10-30lbs a month!!!!  Whattsup?  I am noticeably smaller (clothes and weekly 'after' photos) but I need the scale to keep going down….urrrg.  I need a pep talk.  Thank you! Cry

Dr Malik thinks this is normal? I'm surprised?!

My only problem was eating too much at a time and I'd vomit. That happened half a dozen times after surgery in the first four months or so. But pain otherwise – I'd say no. Except for the surgery pain which was about three weeks I think.

I don't understand why your NOT loosing weight? Are you getting your water in???

I'm sorry, I don't know what to say.

This seems rather odd that you are not losing much, are you weighing what you are eating and drinking.

I would talk to your surgeon again.

Thanks ladies.  I see Dr. Malik in a month, so we'll see.  I'm down 10lbs now, but it seems so odd to not be down more.  I lost more prior to my surgery than I am now!  I'm not getting all my protein or water in (shame on me), I just cant seem to get it in, I'm not hungry.  It's definatly not my intake, that's for sure….that's why this is so weird and frusterating.

I'll know more the end of August.  Cry

Congrats on being down 10 lbs, this is great news but I would follow up with your surgeon to find out what he/she thinks.

You know it takes a while to get all your protein an water in.  Takes sips of water, keep a water bottle with you at all times, and that way you can try and get your water in.

Are you eating small meals several times a day, 5 small meals?

Sometimes the body holds on to fat if we are not eating enough as well, goes into starvation mode, how many calories are you eating in a day?  I think your surgeon would be the best place to start, also are you following up with a dietician as well?

Just an update.  Still exactly 10lbs lost (although one day it was 11.5lbs).  I'm getting in 900-1100 calories a day (70ish grams of protein) and bootcamping 2 days a week in addition to all the walking.

I saw Dr. Malik two weeks ago and he was totally expecting me to be down 40+lbs.  He said that this surgery may not work for me.  Apparently my body 'likes' being 306lbs. Cry

He sent me for an emergency CT Scan last week….results arent in yet.  He's also sending me to see another specialist, but hasnt elaborated beyond that.

Needless to say….I lost 3x more weight with Dr. Bernstein's than this surgery.  I wasnt expecting a miracle….but I was expecting it to help. Yell

Yes… that is  not very  much by now; I would be frustrated!  For the amount you are exercising, your calories are low, so between the low calories and your workouts, you should be losing more.  Good for the doctor to be checking things out for you.  Perhaps you are eating carbs?  Maybe cut any out that you are eating… journal everything and take it to a nutritionist for review.  That's all I can say.. good luck; it HAS to work.. if you are eating less, your body will eventually be feeding off the fat in your body, so the weight has to go down!   Keep on following the rules you were provided, wait for those results and see the nut.

I havent been on in a long while.  I just wanted to report that I'm down 110lbs and although I didnt lose any weight over the holidays…I also didnt gain a pound either!

Exercise works for me now….where it didn't do anything but wear me out before!  I exercise, I lose.  Its a wonderful feeling.  All my 'goal' clothes are 2 sizes too big for me now.  I'm looking forward to the summer :)

Thanks for your support.  It just took me a few months for my body to let go of the weight……
