I had my surgery Sept 12 with Dr Amson in Victoria. If there is one thing I learned though, surgery is just the beginning. There will certainly be lots of adjustments and its by no means a walk in the park.  On an up note though, I am diabetic too and six weeks after surgery, I have seen huge improvements in my blood sugars and dramatic decreases in insulin.

Hi Chattycat,  I am having my surgery too on Dec. 6th with Dr. Malik.  Also started my liquid pre-op diet on Sunday and am diabetic.  So far so good but also think it will not be easy.  I am taking glucerna 3-4 cans per day (Walmart has Equate same stuff just way cheaper) but find it too thick and too sweet.  I have been working up to surgery for about a year, have lost 30 pounds.  I agree with Bluebird, surgery is only the beginning but I have come so far this last year that I know I can and will be successful.

I am only allowed water, nothing else except the glucerna. But.. I have been having a cup of very weak tea first thing in the morning and a cup of herbal tea in the afternoon.  Every Dr. has different requirements, some don't have any pre-op diet at all.

Of course when you say "its by no means a walk in the park" don't forget that post-surgery and pre-surgery too you do need to be out walking in the park, on a treadmill, in the gym or in the pool.  Exercise is really really important too.

I have been walking everyday , some days its really hard , but i have been good so far, I have a little melt down yesterday , because i realize how much of my fun comes from food , and this not eating mean no goin out to music night , no going out to supper. My husband is going out tonight with his brother, I thought about going and not eating but, i don't think i can. I feel like it is cutting me off. blaaaaaaa ok ok enough crying for now…cathy

I have been having coffee every morning, no one said anything about not having it , but i was planning on cutting it out before surgery anyway.

I was really worried that much of my pleasure comes from food and eating out, but it really doesn't have to be interrupted that much.  Marla and I still go out.  I can only eat a portion of an appetizer and that's enough.  And we usually have enough stuff to bring home for two or three meals for me and a little bit for the dog.

But we also have been finding that rather than going out it is also nice to go to the gym, or for a walk, or just sit and read our books together in a park.

It is Day 25 for me on glucerna and I am down 22 pds and 900 cals a day . I am not hungry at all. the stuff is so balanced no craving, the only problem for me is the taste, I never like sweet stuff and now I just down 2oz at  a time . I was trying really hard to stay away from the kitchen at first , but now I have been cooking for the family and made apple butter for Christmas presents, its not that hard, the first five days of headgames with my self were the worst. only 10 days  to go till surgery ..Smile
