US FDA Advisory Committee Recommends Lower BMI for Band Surgery

On Dec 3rd, the Medical Device Advisory Committee for the FDA recommended lowering BMI criteria for patients being considered for stomach banding surgery. If accepted the new BMI used to consider patients Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding, or LAGB, would be 30kg/m2. Read the rest of this post

Weight Loss Surgery Restores Sexual Function in Women

Sex and obesity. The two words together conjure up visions of impossibilities, like mom and dad or worse, grandma and grandpa doing the “deed”. Well guess what? Mom and dad do have sex. So do grandma and grandpa, so it should come as no surprise that physical intimacy is just as important for morbidly obese men and women.

Unfortunately being obese creates incredible obstacles that prevent people from enjoying a normal level of sexual function. Physical limitations, medical co-diseases with obesity and self image challenges all limit both the physical and mental sexual desire for people suffering with obesity.

The good news is that a recent study has shown sexual dysfunction in morbidly obese women was almost completely resolved through weight loss surgery. Read the rest of this post

Weight Loss Surgery Improves Mental Health

We all know that obesity is often co-associated with self -image challenges that frequently result in depression, anxiety and quality of life challenges. At The Endocrine Society’s 92nd Annual Meeting in San Diego, Dr Andrew Johnson presented a study showing that extremely obese adults after receiving weight loss surgery demonstrate not only better physical health but also improved psychological health. Impact of Bariatric Surgery on Diabetes

The correlation between weight and diabetes has long been commonly recognized throughout society.  More recently, a clinical research study conducted by a team of professionals headed by Dr. Henry Buchwald, set out to analyze the impact of bariatric surgery procedures on Type 2 Diabetes [1].  Published in The American Journal of Medicine, the findings systematically reviewed the restrictive procedures known as adjustable lap banding and permanent stomach stapling, and a combination of restrictive and malabsorptive procedures known as gastric bypass and biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch.  The objective was to determine outcomes on diabetes associated with the type of bariatric procedure and subsequent weight loss results. Study results indicated that diabetes was reduced or resolved in the majority of bariatric surgery patients.  Interestingly, the surgical intervention causing the greatest reduction of weight combined with a maintenance period of at least 2 years, also achieved the highest percentage of diabetes resolution.
