Weight Loss Surgery – A weekly Journal 1st Month Post-Op

Ron Merk

It’s been more than 6 years since I had my Roux-en-Y (RnY) Weight Loss Surgery. How time flies when you’re having fun! :) . Anyway, I was going through some of my old documents and discovered my weekly journal that I wrote for the 1st month after my surgery. It’s a great micro look at the days just after surgery. I’m sharing here so that others might gain some perspective as they approach their own surgery and as a reminder to those that are already post operative.

I got my call at the beginning of August, 2005 – 6 years ago. Surgery took place 2 weeks later. No air-conditioning in the hospital and it was hot. Spent 3 days there before being allowed to go home. I was one of the last planned “open” RnY surgeries that Dr Amson did here in Victoria BC. He switched fully to laproscopic  after my surgery unless there was some sort of specific need that prevented WLS from being laproscopically used.

So lets take a look at how those 1st few week went!

Post-op weight loss surgery patients often seriously under estimate the importance of sufficient protein in their diets. With all the talk around vitamin, mineral supplements and the reducing simple carbs in diets, the need for increasing protein sometimes gets lost. Yes, we said increase proteins.

Although Roux-n-Y and Sleeve gastric by-pass surgery patients are most at risk for protein deficiency , Band patients also need to be seriously aware of eating enough protein as well. Read the rest of this post

What Did You Have For Breakfast Today?

Breakfast

What does breakfast look like for a weight loss surgery (Roux-en-Y) Post-op 5 years after their surgery?

I can suggest that it looks pretty normal. You can see for yourself in the attached picture. Looks pretty straight forward. Cereal, banana and coffee. There are probably 10′s of thousands of people that start off breakfast this way across the world every day. Yet, please take a closer look! It’s not all the way it seems.

Bariatric Surgery Can Break Obesity Cycle In Families

Newswise — Obesity is a condition that often follows family lines, but bariatric surgery offers hope for breaking this generational pattern.

“Bariatric surgery is part of a transformational lifestyle change,” said Christopher Still, D.O., director of the Geisinger Center for Nutrition and Weight Management. “Patients who are most successful after bariatric surgery must adapt to healthy diet and exercise, and many times this new lifestyle will rub off on family members, resulting in a healthier family unit.” Read the rest of this post

Weight Loss Surgery Breaks Obesity Cycle in Families

New study finds the womb environment may determine whether a child is destined to become obese.

Maryland, USA— Teenagers and young children of obese mothers who underwent weight-loss surgery prior to pregnancy have been found to have a lower rate of obesity and significantly improved cardio-metabolic characteristics when compared to their siblings born before the same obese mothers had weight-loss surgery. This new study has been accepted for publication in The Endocrine Society‘s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM). Read the rest of this post
