US FDA Advisory Committee Recommends Lower BMI for Band Surgery

On Dec 3rd, the Medical Device Advisory Committee for the FDA recommended lowering BMI criteria for patients being considered for stomach banding surgery. If accepted the new BMI used to consider patients Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding, or LAGB, would be 30kg/m2. Read the rest of this post

Is Canada Far Behind? – 2009 Obesity Stats Released For USA

Well, the 2009 stats for USA obesity rates for their nation are in. No surprise!! All the numbers have significantly increased. Worrisome would be an understatement of the century; considering in the late 80′s the US government recognized the epidemic trend of obesity and set in motion programs to reverse this major health challenge. BMI Doesn’t Tell The Whole Story – WHR May Be Better!

BMI & BMR help decide on WLS Options & Diet

BMI stands for Body Mass Index. BMI is a ratio between you height in Meters and your weight in kilograms.

The BMI Formula: Weight in Kilograms / (Height in Meters)^2

According to the Centers of Disease Control a “good” BMI is within the range: 18.50 – 24.99. Overweight is between 25.00 – 29.99, and Obese applies to all people with BMI’s 30, and higher. Read the rest of this post
