We’ve heard this before and the latest study confirms that Weight Loss Surgery patients who undergo gastric bypass surgery have a higher risk of developing kidney stones. The reason is that the bypass surgery results in changes in their urine composition most likely due to the mal-absorption  of various minerals via the bypass of  the small intestine as part of their RnYGB surgery.

A new study, published in the March 2010 issue of The Journal of Urology, from research carried out by UT Southwestern Medical Centre found that some of these urinary changes place weight-loss surgery patients at higher risk Read the rest of this post

Bariatric Surgery Can Break Obesity Cycle In Families

Newswise — Obesity is a condition that often follows family lines, but bariatric surgery offers hope for breaking this generational pattern.

“Bariatric surgery is part of a transformational lifestyle change,” said Christopher Still, D.O., director of the Geisinger Center for Nutrition and Weight Management. “Patients who are most successful after bariatric surgery must adapt to healthy diet and exercise, and many times this new lifestyle will rub off on family members, resulting in a healthier family unit.” Read the rest of this post

Celebrities and Weight Loss Surgery

I am not really much of a celebrity watcher or fan. When it comes to being in the loop – I am here and the loop is way over there somewhere. Roux-n-y Patients Supplement Probiotics – Lose More Weight, Faster

In a study published in the July issue of the Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery, John Morton, MD, associate professor of surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine and Stanford Hospital & Clinics, showed that patients who take probiotics after the gastric-bypass procedure tend to shed more pounds than those who don’t take the supplements. Probiotics are the so-called “good” bacteria found in yogurt as well as in over-the-counter dietary supplements that help in the digestion of food.

“Surprisingly, the probiotic group attained a significantly greater percent of excess weight loss than that of control group,” Read the rest of this post
