Out of Country Surgeries – New Killer Super Bug

Out of country surgery seems like such a great idea these days, especially with the none supportive incredibly ridiculous policies on gastric bypass and associated surgeries by provincial health authorities here in Canada. Why not go out of country? No waits times, considerably less costly and the surgeons are extremely qualified. But wait!  It appears that not all OOC experiences are the same. In fact, if you’re not careful, you could bring back a hitch hiker that could kill you! Read the rest of this post

Out Of Country (OOC) – A Real Story

The BC Ministry of Health authorizes “Out Of Country” surgery when a BC resident can’t receive timely surgery in BC. Since VIHA funding cutbacks for bariatric bypass surgery, more and more BC residents are taking the OOC to route. It puts them back on the road to good health and significantly shortens their wait time for surgery. OOC not only gets their weight challenges back on track, but also reduces co-morbidity risk complications that increase with longer surgery wait times.

The following account is the personal story of one of our WL&S Support members who took the OOC journey as the only option left to her. To respect her privacy, I’m going to call her Heather (becasue I’ve always liked that name). Heather has been overweight for many years and as you’ll read in her 1st person account, she reached a BMI of close to 50 when she finally made the choice to regain her health. So, to read about a real life OOC journey…

High Incidence of Iron Deficiency Following Bariatric Surgery

By Matthew Constantin, PhD

Approximately one-third of the US population is classified as obese and nearly 5% are morbidly obese [1]. Obesity has proven to be a health problem that is not easily treated by diet, exercise and medical treatment. Over the last few decades, weight loss surgery has emerged as an effective treatment for obesity.

Gastric bypass, laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, vertical banding gastroplasty, biliopancreatic diversion, and biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch are some of the surgical procedures that are commonly performed to help induce weight loss in those affected with obesity. While the overall mortality rate from these procedures is typically less than 1% [2], bariatric surgery is associated with other short- and long-term side effects. Read the rest of this post

Impact of Bariatric Surgery on Diabetes

By Matthew Constantin, PhD

The correlation between weight and diabetes has long been commonly recognized throughout society.  More recently, a clinical research study conducted by a team of professionals headed by Dr. Henry Buchwald, set out to analyze the impact of bariatric surgery procedures on Type 2 Diabetes [1].  Published in The American Journal of Medicine, the findings systematically reviewed the restrictive procedures known as adjustable lap banding and permanent stomach stapling, and a combination of restrictive and malabsorptive procedures known as gastric bypass and biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch.  The objective was to determine outcomes on diabetes associated with the type of bariatric procedure and subsequent weight loss results. Study results indicated that diabetes was reduced or resolved in the majority of bariatric surgery patients.  Interestingly, the surgical intervention causing the greatest reduction of weight combined with a maintenance period of at least 2 years, also achieved the highest percentage of diabetes resolution. Celebrities and Weight Loss Surgery

I am not really much of a celebrity watcher or fan. When it comes to being in the loop – I am here and the loop is way over there somewhere. But I thought, just as an exercise, I would check out how many celebrities have had weight loss surgery. Some of them like Star Jones deny having the surgery so much that it’s pretty well accepted that she did. Others like Sharron Osborne are great supporters of WLS. How many of these people have you heard of or knew had weight loss surgery?
