Out of Country Surgeries – New Killer Super Bug

Out of country surgery seems like such a great idea these days, especially with the none supportive incredibly ridiculous policies on gastric bypass and associated surgeries by provincial health authorities here in Canada. Why not go out of country? No waits times, considerably less costly and the surgeons are extremely qualified. But wait!  It appears that not all OOC experiences are the same. In fact, if you’re not careful, you could bring back a hitch hiker that could kill you! Read the rest of this post

Out Of Country (OOC) – A Real Story

The BC Ministry of Health authorizes “Out Of Country” surgery when a BC resident can’t receive timely surgery in BC. Since VIHA funding cutbacks for bariatric bypass surgery, more and more BC residents are taking the OOC to route. It puts them back on the road to good health and significantly shortens their wait time for surgery. OOC not only gets their weight challenges back on track, but also reduces co-morbidity risk complications that increase with longer surgery wait times.

The following account is the personal story of one of our WL&S Support members who took the OOC journey as the only option left to her. To respect her privacy, I’m going to call her Heather (becasue I’ve always liked that name). Heather has been overweight for many years and as you’ll read in her 1st person account, she reached a BMI of close to 50 when she finally made the choice to regain her health. So, to read about a real life OOC journey…

Reading Food Labels – WLS Pre & Post-Ops

It’s pretty important for everyone considering or who has had WLS to read food labels. Pre-Ops should be choosing foods using the Rule of 5 so they are prepared for picking the right foods after surgery. Post-ops need to always choose foods that have 5 or less grams of sugar and 5 or less grams of fat. To do otherwise will probably result in “Dumping” as well as setting up the patient for using weight gaining foods. Read the rest of this post

Changing The Way We Think About Traditional Weight Loss

Source – St Petersburg Times

Anyone exploring how to lose weight has already heard the story: “It’s all about input vs. output, eating less calories and burning more calories.”

However, many people still prefer going the diet route, searching for the illusive quick fix. They fail to realize that the fundamentals of nutrition are often compromised in favour of a “one size fits all” approach to weight loss. Read the rest of this post

Vitamin D May Help Pre-Ops Too

Source – CBS Reporting Dr. Holly Phillips

Our body controls its weight through a balance of appetite, hunger, and metabolism. These all operate best with the proper intake of vitamins. In fact, all vitamins play a role in maintaining weight, but new research says it’s vitamin D that may actually help you lose it.

Most people, such as Alec Shaffner, know the basic facts about vitamin D.

“I heard you get (vitamin D) from the sunlight,” Shaffner said.

Vitamin D is produced naturally by our bodies during exposure to sunlight. But the nutrient has recently been dubbed a “weight loss vitamin” after a newly-conducted study showed it to be helpful when trying to shed a few pounds. Read the rest of this post
