There’s an old saying, everyone knows it, ‘if at first you don’t succeed, try, and try again’. Good advice unless the task at hand happens to be going on a diet. When it comes to diets it should read, “Don’t try, don’t try again”. Now don’t get me wrong, if you’re overweight and intent on improving your health I’m not advocating giving up. What I’m saying is most fad diets will eventually do you more harm than good. Fear not, there is a solution.
The diet industry is largely about marketing. Psych you up, and give you a meal plan that drops your caloric intake by 50% or more and hope you see enough results in the first few months to keep you coming back for more. You will lose some weight, but maintaining the diet is usually not a reality, and a year later you will find yourself back to where you were, or even heavier. And the really bad news, now you have tricked your body to the point of impairing your own metabolism. Continue reading 'The Curse of the Yo-Yo Dieter'»

Often us website writers run into days and even weeks when the words just don’t seem to appear. The last 2 weeks have been like that for me. I’m the kind of guy that asks for help when I run into a road block, so I posted a message here on WL&S Support asking for some ideas. I got two really good ones. Janice suggested writing about “inspiration”. That got the juices flowing! I know about motivation, attitude AND inspiration. As a Life Coach, it’s hard to see the world as anything else than being at least half full. Then right behind Janice’s post was Heather’s post. She suggested the “bitter truth”. All the awful, dirty secrets associated to weight loss and the surgery alternatives for weight loss.
I must say – these two ideas seemed mutually exclusive. In fact for a few days, I’d say I was even more stymied that when I asked for help on the discussion forum. The good thing is that Janice and Heather have caused me to think and think hard! In the end, it all seems so crystal clear, maybe even a revelation! If you have young children like I do then Dr. Seuss books are probably well known to you. One of my favourites is “The Sneetches” and while my children like it because of the illustrations of Sylvester McMonkey McBean’s wild machines and the wonderful rhythm, I continue to read it because the lesson is one I hope my children come to deeply understand. It’s the lesson of prejudice and discrimination in subtle and not so subtle forms.
Prejudice is an area of non-tolerance for me but I have to admit I’m not completely free of it myself. It’s a tricky one and over the last few months I have had to re-examine my thinking, specifically when it comes to people that are obese. Continue reading 'Perceptions on Obesity'»

Did you every think you’d hear on our Weight Loss Surgery Support site that it’s possible to be too skinny? Well, there’s a 1st time for everything and apparently according to a new research paper using informations from Stats Canada, it’s true. (and we thought are tax dollars get wasted.)
The study, published online in Obesity Journal, examined the relationship between body-mass index and death among 11,326 adults in Canada between 1994 and 2007. BMI uses height and weight to estimate body fat. Continue reading 'Too Skinny Shortens Life, Study Says'»

This has been a tough article for me to write. I’ve made a dozen starts and each time it just didn’t read the way I felt inside. If you’re like me, you’ve fought being overweight most of your life.
Frankly in my case, I failed miserably. Every year I put more pounds on until I found myself trapped in a body that wasn’t me and that there seemed no escape from. In addition, I had a whole host of obesity related medical conditions including high blood pressure, asthma, heal spurs, diabetes and many more, some of which are so personal, I haven’t even shared them with my family. Anyone exploring how to lose weight has already heard the story: “It’s all about input vs. output, eating less calories and burning more calories.”
However, many people still prefer going the diet route, searching for the illusive quick fix. They fail to realize that the fundamentals of nutrition are often compromised in favour of a “one size fits all” approach to weight loss. During the June/2009 Naniamo Support Group meeting there was an excellent discussion about addictions and transfer addictions as they relate to WLS. What made the discussion was the openness and willingness of everyone who shared their personal struggles. STANDING up and talking about personal struggles is never easy, but when people share their stories, it provides a deeper understanding for everyone participating.
