Food Doesn’t Have To Mean Eating

Segment taken from the book “Eating the Moment – 141 mindful practices to overcome overeating one meal at a time” by Pavel G. Somov, Ph.D.

The meaning we assign to objects around us predetermines their function: a tomato in the hand of a chef means food, whereas a tomato in the hand of a heckler means feedback.  You see the objects that we collectively refer to as “food” can mean other things besides being edible.  Learning to recognize these other uses and meanings allow us to break the over conditioned associations between food and eating.  Here are some ways to look at food as something other than food.

Food as art: inhaling life into nature morte.  Food is both the subject of art and an artistic medium.  Read the rest of this post

Weight Loss Surgery Improves Mental Health

We all know that obesity is often co-associated with self -image challenges that frequently result in depression, anxiety and quality of life challenges. At The Endocrine Society’s 92nd Annual Meeting in San Diego, Dr Andrew Johnson presented a study showing that extremely obese adults after receiving weight loss surgery demonstrate not only better physical health but also improved psychological health. The Curse of the Yo-Yo Dieter

There’s an old saying, everyone knows it, ‘if at first you don’t succeed, try, and try again’. Good advice unless the task at hand happens to be going on a diet. When it comes to diets it should read, “Don’t try, don’t try again”. Now don’t get me wrong, if you’re overweight and intent on improving your health I’m not advocating giving up. What I’m saying is most fad diets will eventually do you more harm than good. Fear not, there is a solution.

The diet industry is largely about marketing. Psych you up, and give you a meal plan that drops your caloric intake by 50% or more and hope you see enough results in the first few months to keep you coming back for more.  You will lose some weight, but maintaining the diet is usually not a reality, and a year later you will find yourself back to where you were, or even heavier. And the really bad news, now you have tricked your body to the point of impairing your own metabolism. Read the rest of this post

Inspiration, Depression and Weight Loss

Often us website writers run into days and even weeks when the words just don’t seem to appear. The last 2 weeks have been like that for me. I’m the kind of guy that asks for help when I run into a road block, so I posted a message here on WL&S Support asking for some ideas. I got two really good ones. Janice suggested writing about “inspiration”. That got the juices flowing! I know about motivation, attitude AND inspiration. As a Life Coach, it’s hard to see the world as anything else than being at least half full. Then right behind Janice’s post was Heather’s post. She suggested the “bitter truth”. All the awful, dirty secrets associated to weight loss and the surgery alternatives for weight loss.

I must say – these two ideas seemed mutually exclusive. In fact for a few days, I’d say I was even more stymied that when I asked for help on the discussion forum. The good thing is that Janice and Heather have caused me to think and think hard! In the end, it all seems so crystal clear, maybe even a revelation! Read the rest of this post

Perceptions on Obesity

Author: Marshall Melnychuk

If you have young children like I do then Dr. Seuss books are probably well known to you. One of my favourites is “The Sneetches” and while my children like it because of the illustrations of Sylvester McMonkey McBean’s wild machines and the wonderful rhythm, I continue to read it because the lesson is one I hope my children come to deeply understand. It’s the lesson of prejudice and discrimination in subtle and not so subtle forms.

Prejudice is an area of non-tolerance for me but I have to admit I’m not completely free of it myself. It’s a tricky one and over the last few months I have had to re-examine my thinking, specifically when it comes to people that are obese. Read the rest of this post
