What Did You Have For Breakfast Today?

Breakfast

What does breakfast look like for a weight loss surgery (Roux-en-Y) Post-op 5 years after their surgery?

I can suggest that it looks pretty normal. You can see for yourself in the attached picture. Looks pretty straight forward. Cereal, banana and coffee. There are probably 10′s of thousands of people that start off breakfast this way across the world every day. Yet, please take a closer look! It’s not all the way it seems.

Weight Loss Surgery Restores Sexual Function in Women

Sex and obesity. The two words together conjure up visions of impossibilities, like mom and dad or worse, grandma and grandpa doing the “deed”. Well guess what? Mom and dad do have sex. So do grandma and grandpa, so it should come as no surprise that physical intimacy is just as important for morbidly obese men and women.

Unfortunately being obese creates incredible obstacles that prevent people from enjoying a normal level of sexual function. Physical limitations, medical co-diseases with obesity and self image challenges all limit both the physical and mental sexual desire for people suffering with obesity.

The good news is that a recent study has shown sexual dysfunction in morbidly obese women was almost completely resolved through weight loss surgery. Read the rest of this post

Roux-en-Y Surgery Boosts Insulin Sensitivity for Type 2 Diabetes more than Traditional Diet Treatments

Finally the facts speak for themselves. A recent research study has proven that gastric bypass surgery (Roux-en-Y) significantly increases insulin sensitivity for obese adult Type 2 diabetics over traditional diet options. In fact – 100% of the study population who received gastric bypass surgery, completely eliminated their Type 2 diabetic medications. This means that their insulin sensitivity challenges were entirely resolved through their gastric bypass surgery procedure.

This is compared to the control group who were put on traditional 800 calorie diets AND took at least  twice as long to reach the surgery group’s weight loss. Only 55% of the diet group was able to completely eliminate their diabetic medications. Read the rest of this post

4 Kidney Stone Prevention Techniques

Wouldn’t it be nice to know if there were ways to significantly lower your chances of kidney stones?

You might just be getting older and you know that many people get kidney stones in mid-life. If you’re obese you chances double, or if you’re serious about gastric bypass weight loss surgery, you probably already know that one of the increased risks for post-ops is a significantly higher chance of kidney stones.

Now for those uninitiated, passing kidney stones are one of the most painful  maladies know to humans. Lets just say that if you have any choice at all, you don’t want to go there. Trying to pass a stone can often take weeks or sometimes months. The pain is usually completely debilitating. Thankfully the medical interventions we have today usually result in  positive outcomes, but even with today’s medical advancement, kidney stones can result in the atrophy (or death) of the kidney affected.

Prevention would be SO MUCH better, so we’re going to share 4 ways to reduce your chances of forming stones in your kidneys. Read the rest of this post

High Incidence of Iron Deficiency Following Bariatric Surgery

By Matthew Constantin, PhD

Approximately one-third of the US population is classified as obese and nearly 5% are morbidly obese [1]. Obesity has proven to be a health problem that is not easily treated by diet, exercise and medical treatment. Over the last few decades, weight loss surgery has emerged as an effective treatment for obesity.

Gastric bypass, laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, vertical banding gastroplasty, biliopancreatic diversion, and biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch are some of the surgical procedures that are commonly performed to help induce weight loss in those affected with obesity. While the overall mortality rate from these procedures is typically less than 1% [2], bariatric surgery is associated with other short- and long-term side effects. Read the rest of this post
