High Incidence of Iron Deficiency Following Bariatric Surgery

By Matthew Constantin, PhD

Approximately one-third of the US population is classified as obese and nearly 5% are morbidly obese [1]. Obesity has proven to be a health problem that is not easily treated by diet, exercise and medical treatment. Over the last few decades, weight loss surgery has emerged as an effective treatment for obesity.

Gastric bypass, laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, vertical banding gastroplasty, biliopancreatic diversion, and biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch are some of the surgical procedures that are commonly performed to help induce weight loss in those affected with obesity. While the overall mortality rate from these procedures is typically less than 1% [2], bariatric surgery is associated with other short- and long-term side effects. Read the rest of this post

Vitamin D – Sunlight and Tanning Beds

Source Newswise — To help the general public better understand the relationship between vitamin D and the sun, the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention has issued a position statement on vitamin D, sun protection and skin cancer prevention. The Council recommends that vitamin D be obtained from a combination of dietary sources and supplements and not through intentional exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

“I heard you get (vitamin D) from the sunlight,” Shaffner said.

Vitamin D is produced naturally by our bodies during exposure to sunlight. But the nutrient has recently been dubbed a “weight loss vitamin” after a newly-conducted study showed it to be helpful when trying to shed a few pounds. Read the rest of this post

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is essential for maintaining normal calcium metabolism Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is the most important of the Vitamin D group and is the only Vitamin D recommended for WLS Post-ops. It can be synthesized by humans in the skin upon exposure to ultraviolet-B (UVB) radiation from sunlight, or it can be obtained from the diet. Vitamin D2 is less effective in humans especial Post-op WLS patients. After surgery the only way for post-ops to receive adequate amounts of vitamin D3 is via diet and vitamin supplements which must be taken for the rest of a post-op’s life..
